Minnesota Scholastic Journalism

Guthrie Day

Journalism Day at the Guthrie was Wednesday, February 26, 2014. This annual event brings student journalists together who are interested in the fine arts and review writing.

Participants were taken on a tour of the Guthrie theater including a behind-the-scenes look at the backstage areas including set construction, props, costumes and rehearsal areas.

After the tour, participants heard some writing tips and received some Q & A time from local arts reporter and editor Graydon Royce of the Star Tribune. Lunch followed, and the grand finale was seeing the production of Tristan & Yseult by the visiting acting company Kneehigh from Cornwall.

Journalism Day at the Guthie is also a contest, and the participants submitted their review of no more than 600 words to contest coordinator Laurie Hansen of Stillwater Area High School. First, second, and third place winners as well as two honorable mentions were awarded. The first and second place winners can be seen here on the JEM website.

Journalism Day at the Guthrie is an annual JEM event that usually takes place in February. Applications for attendance are sent out by the Minnesota High School Press Association in December of each year. The event’s tickets are paid for by a grant from the Guthrie Theater, but student participants pay a $20 fee for lunch and tour costs.
